Update: Reynolds Field Refurbishment Project Updates

Marblehead Recreation & Parks shares project updates with the community and lists public engagement sessions as the Commission continues to coordinate the options for refurbishing the Reynolds (Green Street) Field and current hockey rink.
The goal of the Reynolds Field Refurbishment Project is to transform the present site into a safe and reliable ice rink, sports deck, community greenspace, and functional softball field. Supporting the project, the Larz Anderson Bequest was granted in 2018 for $2.2 million. The bequest, currently worth $3.3 million, was intended (not binding) to go toward a public winter sports facility. It was also recommended that the facility support various sports and other recreational functions. The space will be a Tier 1 facility with a dependable revenue stream to fund ongoing maintenance and replacement costs as equipment reaches its natural end of life.

April 2026 Update: The Reynolds Field Refurbishment Project is moving forward and the project stands at approximately 30% of design completion.
On April 14, the Marblehead Recreation & Parks Commission voted to direct the engineering and design firm, CHA Consulting, to design the green space for turf or natural grass. With the vote to move forward with a synthetic turf solution, the engineering and design firm is now designing and planning parking, lighting, and playing fields.
The vote for synthetic turf was 4-1 in favor, with Commissioner Larry Simposon dissenting because he prefers a natural grass solution. Simpson is in full favor of the rink and sports deck plan but prefers the natural turf option, as he has dedicated his entire career to preserving and beautifying green space.
This spring and summer, CHA proceeds with planning as directed, with bi-weekly check-ins with the Marblehead Recreation & Parks Commission. The Commission intends to engage the community again when next phase project plans are available.
