Sewer Department FAQs

The home owner’s responsibility runs from the middle of the street to the house.  That is, anything between the house and the middle of the street in front of the house is up to the homeowner to maintain.

If the sewer backs up (for example the toilet, sink, tub or washing machine) please call the Water & Sewer Commission Emergency telephone line at (781) 631-0102 before calling a plumber.  The Water and Sewer Department has 24-hour emergency service will make sure that the problem isn’t in the Town’s system.

Please call the Water and Sewer Department first and they will help if they can.  A sewer pipe must be repaired by a Licensed Drain Layer.  A list of current drain layers is available at the Water & Sewer Office.  If the problem is in the house and needs to be repaired, the homeowner would call a plumber after calling the Water and Sewer Department.

Always call the Water and Sewer Department first.

To keep drains running freely never allow grease to run into the drains.  The Department discourages large mats of material going into your garbage disposal.  Residents are encouraged to compost organic material instead.  The Health Department sells composters for $20 at the Mary Alley Municipal Building at 7 Widger Road.  Visit the Health Department page for more information.

Your help maintaining the catch basins near your residence is beneficial to all.  If you have a town catch basin near your property it would be very helpful if you could clear the basin of leaves, snow and ice.  Keeping the drain open will help to prevent street flooding.

All abatements must be approved by the Water and Sewer Commission.  The first step in the process to seek an abatement is to submit to the superintendent a letter explaining, in detail, the request for an abatement.  The letter should be submitted within seven (7) days after the date of the bill and should include any evidence that you want to be considered.
