Marblehead, MA — The Town of Marblehead is pleased to announce the beginning of roofing improvement projects at the Mary A. Alley Municipal Building and the Judy and Gene Jacobi Community Center. These projects represent a key investment in maintaining and extending the life of the Town’s public facilities. Work began this month and will continue through the beginning of December.

The Mary A. Alley Municipal Building project includes the full replacement of the existing roof system and installation of improved insulation to enhance energy efficiency. The work represents the first phase of a series of planned improvements to the building, with future phases completing upgrades to windows, the elevator, and HVAC system through funding approved under Article 33 at the 2025 Town Meeting.

At the Judy and Gene Jacobi Community Center, a new roof recoating system is focused on eliminating long-standing water infiltration issues and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the facility. Serving as home to the Council on Aging and Recreation and Parks department, the building is a gathering place for residents of all ages for programming and making connections.

Construction of both projects is managed by MDM Engineering Company, Inc. under the oversight of Stephen Cummings, Town Building Commissioner. “These roof improvements will address long-standing maintenance needs and protect the structural integrity of both buildings,” said Cummings. “Our goal is to ensure these facilities remain safe, functional, and efficient for the departments and community members who rely on them every day.”

During construction, both buildings will remain open to the public, though residents and visitors may notice temporary access restrictions, department closures or construction equipment on-site. The community’s patience and cooperation during construction are greatly appreciated.

“These investments reflect the community’s commitment to responsibly maintaining our public assets,” said Thatcher W. Kezer III, Town Administrator. “By taking a proactive approach to maintenance, we’re keeping our facilities safe and efficient today while protecting taxpayer resources for the future.”

Together, the two projects represent an investment of more than $800,000 in the preservation of Marblehead’s municipal infrastructure. The $450,000 Mary A. Alley Municipal Building project and the $389,000 Jacobi Community Center project are funded by Article 11 Capital Improvement Funding, approved at the 2022 Town Meeting.
