April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The month of April is designated annually as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The Marblehead Police Department will be conducting increased distracted driving enforcement throughout April as part of the Municipal Road Safety Grant Program.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2023, approximately 3,275 people died due to distracted driving.

Distracted driving is defined as any activity that takes your attention off the road. This includes texting, talking on the phone, eating, adjusting the radio, or using in-car screens.

Texting and driving is the most common cause of distracted driving.

What you can do:

  • Put your phone away before driving
  • Use “do not disturb” while driving
  • Set your GPS and music up before you start driving
  • If you must respond to a message, pull over safely
